Three months or three thousand miles was reasonable advice when engines ran conventional oil, tolerances were looser and filtration was cruder. Modern engines running synthetic oil have intervals several times longer, published by the manufacturer, and the number that matters is in your owner's manual rather than on a sticker in the windshield.
Why the interval got longer
Three things changed. Synthetic base oils resist thermal breakdown far better than conventional oils and hold their viscosity longer. Additive packages that neutralize acids and suspend contaminants improved substantially. And engines themselves run cleaner, with better filtration and tighter tolerances producing less contamination in the first place.
The result is that manufacturers now specify intervals that would have destroyed an engine in 1975, and they specify them while warranting the engine, which is a meaningful commitment.
Oil life monitors
Most vehicles built in the last fifteen years carry an oil life monitoring system. The better implementations do not simply count miles. They model oil degradation using engine temperature, revolutions, load, trip length and the number of cold starts, then report remaining oil life as a percentage.
These systems are conservative by design, because a manufacturer that damages engines through optimistic intervals has a warranty problem. Following the monitor is following the manufacturer's engineering, and it adapts automatically to how you actually drive.
Manuals list a shorter interval for severe conditions, and the definition catches more drivers than expected: mostly short trips, extensive idling, stop-start traffic, towing, dusty roads, or sustained extreme temperatures. A car used for a four-mile commute in winter is operating under severe service even though nothing about the driving feels severe.
Short trips are the real problem
This is worth understanding because it is counterintuitive. Engines produce water and unburned fuel as combustion byproducts, and both end up in the oil. Once the engine reaches full operating temperature, that contamination evaporates off and leaves through the crankcase ventilation system.
An engine that never gets fully warm never boils it off. Water accumulates, mixes with combustion acids, and degrades the oil far faster than mileage alone suggests. A car doing many short cold trips can need oil changes on a time basis rather than a mileage basis, which is why manuals specify both a mileage figure and a maximum number of months.
Choosing the oil
Two specifications matter and both are in the manual.
Viscosity grade, written as something like 0W-20 or 5W-30. The first number is cold-flow behavior, the second is viscosity at operating temperature. Modern engines specify thin oils partly for fuel economy and partly because oil is used hydraulically to operate variable valve timing. Using a heavier grade than specified can cause driveability faults, not just reduced economy.
Performance specification, an API service category such as SP, or a manufacturer approval such as a VW, BMW or Mercedes-Benz number. On European vehicles the manufacturer approval usually matters more than the API rating, and using an unapproved oil can affect warranty coverage and, on diesels with particulate filters, cause real damage.
The filter and the rest of it
Change the oil filter at every oil change; the cost is trivial against the consequence of not doing so. Beyond that, an oil change is the natural moment to check tire pressures, top fluids, inspect belts and hoses and look at brake pad thickness, which is why the service is often bundled with an inspection.
What you should decline is a recommendation to change oil at an interval much shorter than the manual specifies, or an engine flush on a normally maintained engine. Neither extends engine life on a modern vehicle.

Reading the dipstick
Oil that has gone dark is not necessarily oil that needs changing. Detergent additives are designed to suspend soot and combustion byproducts so they can be carried to the filter, which means darkening is the oil working rather than the oil failing. Diesels in particular blacken oil within a few hundred miles and that is normal.
What does indicate a problem is a change in texture or level.
- Gritty between the fingers suggests contamination the filter is not catching.
- Milky or the color of coffee with cream suggests coolant entering the oil, which is a head gasket or cooling system problem and needs immediate attention.
- A strong fuel smell suggests fuel dilution, common on short-trip direct-injection engines and worth mentioning at the next service.
- A dropping level between changes is worth tracking. Some engines consume oil by design, and manufacturers publish an acceptable rate. Consumption above that rate is a fault.
Checking the level monthly takes a minute and catches the one failure mode that destroys engines quickly, which is running low. Park level, engine off and cooled for several minutes, pull the dipstick, wipe, reinsert fully, pull again and read. Some newer vehicles have no dipstick and report level electronically through the dashboard menu instead.
Who changes it
Dealer, independent shop, quick-lube chain or yourself, in roughly descending order of cost and ascending order of variability. Two points are worth making about the choice.
Dealer servicing is not required to maintain a warranty. Federal law prevents a manufacturer from conditioning warranty coverage on using their dealers or their branded parts, provided the work is done correctly with oil meeting the specification and you keep records. That is worth knowing because the opposite is frequently implied.
Quick-lube operations vary widely, and the two things to confirm are that the oil used meets your manufacturer's specification, not merely the viscosity, and that the drain plug and filter are correctly torqued. Overtightened drain plugs and double-gasketed filters are the two most common causes of oil loss after a service.
Keeping records
Keep receipts. Documented maintenance at manufacturer intervals protects your warranty position if an engine claim ever arises, and it raises resale value. A folder of receipts is one of the few things that reliably adds money to a private sale.
