The check engine light indicates that the engine control unit has detected a fault and stored a diagnostic trouble code. It covers hundreds of possible faults, from a loose fuel cap to a failing catalytic converter, which is why the light alone tells you very little.
Steady versus flashing
A steady light means a fault is stored and should be investigated, but the vehicle is generally safe to drive to a shop. Book it in the next few days.
A flashing light means an active misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter. Unburned fuel is reaching the exhaust and the converter can overheat within minutes. Reduce speed, avoid heavy acceleration, and stop driving as soon as it is safe. A converter is one of the more expensive parts on the vehicle and this is how they get destroyed.
Reading the code yourself
Every US vehicle from 1996 onward has a standardized OBD-II port, usually under the dashboard on the driver's side. An inexpensive scanner or a phone adapter reads stored codes, and many auto parts stores read them free.
A code is a starting point, not a diagnosis. P0171, for example, means the system is running lean on bank one. That can be a vacuum leak, a failing mass airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump, a leaking injector or an exhaust leak upstream of a sensor. The code narrows the search. It does not name the part.
Clearing a code turns off the light without fixing anything, and it also resets the emissions readiness monitors, which take many drive cycles to complete. A vehicle with incomplete monitors fails an emissions inspection in states that run them, even with no light showing. Clear codes after a repair, not instead of one.
The cheap causes worth checking first
- The fuel cap. Loose, cracked or with a perished seal, it triggers evaporative system codes. Tighten it, and the light may clear itself after several drive cycles.
- A recently disconnected battery can set codes.
- Low fuel in some vehicles sets fuel system codes.
Beyond those, most causes need diagnosis. Oxygen sensors, mass airflow sensors, ignition coils, thermostats and evaporative purge valves make up a large share of what turns the light on.
Paying for diagnosis
Expect a shop to charge for diagnostic time, typically an hour of labor, and that is a fair charge. What you are paying for is someone tracing an intermittent fault to its cause rather than replacing parts until the light goes out. Ask whether the diagnostic fee is credited against the repair if you proceed, which many shops do.
Be skeptical of a fixed price quoted from the code alone with no testing. A shop that replaces the part the code names, without confirming it, is guessing with your money.
Can you keep driving
With a steady light and no change in how the car drives, generally yes, for a short period. If the light is accompanied by rough running, loss of power, unusual noises, overheating or smoke, treat it as a stop-driving situation. The same applies to any flashing light.
Emissions faults are also an inspection issue. In states with emissions testing, a stored code or an illuminated light is an automatic failure, and the vehicle cannot be registered until it is resolved. The EPA explains how inspection and maintenance programs work and which states operate them.
